William Hinton Limited has an office in Stow-on-the-Wold, where we predominantly look after owner managed businesses, in several cases we are dealing with the second and third generations of the family behind the businesses. Our clients are mainly based in the Gloucestershire, South Warwickshire, South Worcestershire and West Oxfordshire region, though we have a number of clients in London and some as far afield as Kent, Staffordshire and Cornwall. Our client base is made up of a wide range of businesses, with the owners of those businesses having very different goals and ambitions. It is our clients’ personal goals and ambitions that are most important to us. It is with these in mind that our clients enter into business in the first place, with their chosen trade or profession becoming the vehicle to provide the means to achieve those personal goals and the desired standard of living.
In the 1980s being in business was relatively easy. Inflation was at its highest for a long time and property prices were soaring. This resultant involuntary increase in businesses’ equity meant that money was freely available, with the banks lending money almost under any circumstances, providing that the level of security they required was available. In many cases it could be said that the banks lent irresponsibly. This free availability of additional funds to invest in businesses frequently masked underlying problems and inefficiencies and it was these businesses that were put to the test during the 1990s.
In the 1990s the worst recession that most people can remember hit the British economy and the banks almost reversed their lending policies, by going into “damage limitation mode”, with the result that we saw the largest level of insolvencies on record for a long time. Business failure became an everyday item in the news. Most businesses that survived the 1990s in its recession period grew strong from their experience and many proprietors and directors of businesses set out their stall in order to reduce their reliance as far as possible on the financial institutions. During the 1990s we, at William Hinton Limited, decided to look at enhancing the services we provide to our client base, in order to provide a greater level of realistic help and assistance.
The result of our experiences in the 1990s is to have developed a practice that provides a wide range of services for its client base and whilst still recognising that the production of statutory accounts and carrying out the relevant tax work is important to all businesses, it is just as important if not more so, to ensure that the proprietors or directors achieve their personal goals.
With the current “economic downturn”, uncertain residential property values, reduced lending multiples and doubts about interest and inflation rates, many businesses are already facing troubled times ahead. The range of services that we have already developed to help our clients maintain control over their businesses are even more relevant, as we seek to help our clients find the edge over their competitors so as to retain turnover and profitability. This will enable them to continue through the troubled times and emerge stronger and more able to take on additional business when the economy stabilises again. There may even be opportunities to acquire competitors which have not proved as resilient.
Our services range from strategic planning and development, through to fund raising for clients; however, most of our time is spent working alongside the client ensuring that they have the best chance of achieving their goals.
As a practice we have therefore, to a certain extent, moved away from the “necessary evil” image that accountancy practices have and like any other service provider our “added value” services, which have become extremely popular, have to be cost justified. It is our ability to provide high quality and justifiable business development services that continues to stand us in good stead.
